We have launched the #BlockchainDev1000 Initiative!
Africa is the youngest population in the world. The average age of an African is 19.5 [years old], compared with 46 or 47 in Germany and Japan. Not to mention the fact these young people are hungry and willing to learn new technologies that can empower them. All they need is an opportunity. Blockchain technology offers this opportunity and the launch of #BlockchainDev1000 initiative by Blockchain Nigeria User Group is one of the needed first steps in providing young aspiring developers in Nigeria the opportunity to accelerate their quest.
What we are doing, is to invest in their talent, and that talent investment will reap significant rewards for them as they grow. We are starting off this initiative in partnership with IBM and Vite Blockchain platform supports. The vision is to train 1000 blockchain developers in Nigeria on different skillsets within the next 1–2 years, in other to fill the current talent gap in the ecosystem. The unveiling took place at the Unchained Blockchain Meetup held at Africa Fintech Foundry (AFF) Victoria Island, Lagos on 17th August 2019.
If Blockchain Nigeria User Group and Organization of Blockchain Technology User (OBTU) will remain at the forefront of Advocacy and awareness creation then they must also take the responsibility of grooming the skills needed to make this tech a reality in Nigeria and Africa. We welcome more partnership opportunities.

Technology is an enabler. It’s the real game-changer in the emerging decentralized future. Technology is the most potent tool for disrupting Africa’s ailing infrastructures. The data deficit can only be cured by deploying news tech tools. Blockchain tech is one of such tools.
Blockchains typically add an immutable layer of trust to web applications by being a distributed ledger that is a tamper-proof history of all transactions sent to it.
This enables a lot of new applications and business models currently being explored by pioneers. These include asset management and tracking, borderless payments, automated payments (IOT), decentralized certification, decentralized registries and much more.
We saw what happen with the mobile-phone revolution in Africa, where we went from less than four million phone lines on the continent to over 800 million in about 18 years. Many, many other industries are ripe for disruption and the adoption of blockchain technology and other techs of the fourth industrial revolution could spur the creation of new products and services cutting across education, health agriculture, real estate, supply chain, etc. Technology gives us an opportunity to develop new business models and to adopt new practices — not necessarily best practices — because the conditions that exist across Nigeria and most African countries require unconventional approaches, and Blockchain technology could allow us to redesign and reimagine new ways of doing business that can drive down costs and keep quality high.
Frankly, we need to rebuild lots of things. Eight hundred million people are supposed to move into African cities by 2050. That’s a big problem on the one hand but also massive opportunities for real-estate development, urban infrastructure, urban planning, architecture, healthcare, commerce and so forth on the other hand. Imagine that Africa imports about $40 billion worth of food annually and Nigeria alone does over half of that amount when it has lands and perfect weather conditions to grow her own foods. That’s a great opportunity for someone to build a blockchain-digitized value chain agribusiness.
The businesses that will thrive in the emerging decentralized business future, are those that realize that their role in Africa is not simply to make profits but to contribute to the development of a whole country — and eventually the whole continent. They must be willing to transform societies in unique ways, create value and help to rewrite a better history of Africa industrialization.
We have put in place several strategies that will make the project a success. These will soon be made available in our roadmap.
